£101 Billion Wasted

Full sized view

It is estimated that of the £587 billion spent by the state last year, £101 billion was wasted, enough to cut the tax burden of every household by over £4,000 a year.

Here are just a few examples of where all your money has gone:

£65 million fine from the EU for the farm payments fiasco.£36 million for road building overruns.£380 million for written-off tax credit overpayments.£1.4 billion on consultants.£1.6 billion on failed IT schemes.£5 billion increase in public administration since 1997.£100,000 to assess whether £400,000 spent on modern art for seven hospitals was money well spent. £3 million by tax inspectors at HM Revenue and Customs on flights, including £2.1 million on flights to Scotland. £400 million on 'cost control' for the Olympic Games.

I could go on, but my tears are messing up the keys on my laptop. If you can bear to read more, the "Bumper book of Government Waste" should really upset you.

One of Gordons favorite words is “frugal” , well he may be frugal with his own money, but certainly not with ours. Can you imagine a company accountant wasting £101 billion of his company's hard-earned income, but Gordon does not have that problem, a little new stealth tax here and there and it’s soon replaced, by you.

I know that I have accused Gordon Brown of wasting taxpayers’ money, but I will also give him credit where it is due. He has actually found a way of saving taxpayers’ money. During the month of March 2,675 prisoners were let out of jail early, and as the annual cost of keeping one prisoner in jail is estimated at £25,718, this represents a considerable saving.

In fact it gets better: since last June a total of 23,716 prisoners were released early. However, I have found a flaw in the plan. As these figures included 4,487 violent thugs and 2,100 burglars, the additional cost to the NHS and peoples home insurance might outweigh the savings.

The thought for June

The more you study the more you know, the more you know the more you forget, the more you forget the less you know, so why study?
